Remembrance of Alfredo’s life, hosted by poet Tess Gallagher
Sunday, August 6 at 2 in our Sculpture Garden
Renowned painter Alfredo Arreguín passed away in April of this year after a long and groundbreaking career. Arreguín was born in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico and came to Seattle in 1956. He attended the University of Washington, graduating with a BFA in 1967, and a MFA in 1969.
Alfredo soon became an influential painter in the Seattle art scene. He is considered one of the founders of “Pattern Painting” along with artist like Chuck Close. His work is in the collections of the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; the Mexican Museum, San Francisco; the Mexican Fine Art Center Museum, Chicago; the Seattle Art Museum, and numerous other museums. Recent regional exhibitions include his 2018 Life Patterns Retrospective at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and the 2022 exhibition Arreguín: Painter from the New World at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner.
Our exhibition consists of Alfredo’s very limited number of available paintings, including his last completed works and other recent paintings, as well as works that were part of the exhibitions at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and the Museum of Northwest Art. The online exhibition also includes works from 1974 and 1976.
Sunday afternoon there will be a remembrance of Alfredo’s life hosted by his close friend, poet Tess Gallagher with contributions from UW professor Lauro Flores, author of the definitive book Alfredo Arreguín: Patterns and Dreams of Nature. Other friends will also be speaking, and the public is invited to briefly comment as well.
