In their engaging workshop, John and Lisa Merrill will help you nurture your creativity and strengthen your ability to tell compelling visual stories of the places you explore and the people you meet. Whidbey is a fascinating and beautiful island on which to learn, connect, and dive into the art of travel photography. Photographers of all levels with any camera (including a mobile phone) are welcome.

At beaches, forests, towns, marinas, a glassblowing studio, weaving workshop and other locations, John and Lisa will offer on-the-spot guidance and encouragement. They’ll help you harness the transformative power of light, compose for impact, and intentionally make, versus take, photos. As needed, they’ll demystify your camera’s features and settings. Through experimentation you’ll discover new ways of seeing and photographing, and grow as an artist.

Most of each day will be immersed in on-location photography at Whidbey’s cultural, historic and scenic wonders. There will be opportunities to capture majestic landscapes and intimate patterns of nature, create portraits of people at work and play, delve into food, wildlife, architectural and abstract photography, and explore creative blur through intentional camera movement. John and Lisa will do demos and share tips to expand your visual toolbox so you can create high-impact images with a strong sense of place.

Presentations at the Pacific NorthWest Art School will complement field learning. Each participant will have a private meeting with John or Lisa to discuss Whidbey images, and group reviews will provide additional feedback, support and inspiration.
