Evocative Travel Photography – Telling Your Story of a Place and Its People

John & Lisa Merrill, Instructors
Dates: Thursday, October 20th – Monday, October 24th, 2022 (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $1,250
Registration: $25
Materials: $0

In this fun workshop for photographers of all levels, John and Lisa Merrill will help you nurture your creativity and develop the skills and mindset to tell compelling visual stories of the places you explore and the people you meet. Whidbey is a fascinating and beautiful island on which to learn, connect, and create, and improve your mastery of the art of travel photography.

At beaches, forests, gardens, small towns, a marina, a fort, a pottery workshop, a glassblowing studio, and the world’s best junkyard, John and Lisa will offer guidance and encouragement. They’ll help you become fluent with your camera’s features and settings and break through barriers (both technical and psychological).

Hands-on photo coaching can be transformative as you learn to notice the nuances of light and compose for impact — intentionally making, versus taking, photos. You’ll be encouraged to experiment and discover new ways of seeing and photographing, and continually develop your creative vision.

Most of each day will be devoted to outdoor photography. There will be opportunities to capture intimate and majestic landscapes, create portraits on location, build action photography skills, and dive into the playful and powerful world of intentional camera movement (ICM).

In daily presentations, John and Lisa will share tips and techniques to help you master the technical and artistic sides of travel photography. You’ll explore compelling compositions, landscape, food, architectural and street photography, and the effective use of flash and reflectors, continually expanding your visual toolbox.

Presentations, discussions and image reviews will take place in the Pacific NorthWest Art School’s classroom. Each participant will have a one-on-one meeting with John or Lisa to review Whidbey images, along with up to 20 images from a previous trip. Group image reviews will provide additional feedback, encouragement and inspiration.

Visual storytelling goes beyond image creation, and the Merrills will share techniques for organizing photos, optimizing your favorites, and combining them into compelling stories of your travel adventures to treasure and share.
