In this introduction to soft block and pochoir (stencil) techniques we will explore 3 different ways of making repeating patterns. We will use combinations of these techniques to up cycle fabric scraps and paper into gift cards, wrapping paper and wearables. We will welcome how imperfections in the hand printing process are part of why these techniques are so appealing. I encourage you to start looking at different patterns for inspiration before you come to class (great places to start are Spoonflower and Pinterest). Jing Jing Tsong is a children’s book illustrator whose images are digital collages of soft block printing and pochoir. She has illustrated over 20 picture books and her work has been commissioned by clients such as the National Cherry Blossom Festival, McDonald’s and The United States Postal Service (for 3 Forever Stamps).
